Bluegrass Jamborees with the Tall Timber Boys
Fast pickin', bad jokes, and fiddlin' women

Courtesy of Phil Williams, we have a series of live "Bluegrass Jamborees" with the Tall Timber Boys (and one "gal type fiddle player") broadcast Thursday nights during the Spring and Summer of 1968. For any of you missing fingers, that's 48 years ago. There are more than the usual number of typos in the 1968 program guides making it sometimes difficult to figure out when these programs were aired. But we do know who the performers are: Paul Wiley, banjo; Vivian Williams, fiddle; Phil Williams, mandolin; Barney Munger, bass; Loren Wohlgemuth, guitar; and Chuck Green, announcer.

The Tall Timber Boys on KOMO

In the 1970's Phil Williams did an "old timey" music show with John Burke, on occasion substituted for Tiny Freeman, produced a series of programs with Darrel McMichael of Seattle Folklore Society concerts, regularly brought the Tall Timber String Band up to KRAB for fund raising marathons, and was eventually sentenced to a couple of terms on the Jack Straw Board of Directors.

Tall Timber String Band in KRAB Music Studio

The above photo was found in the Jan 1975 program guide. Taken in the KRAB Fire House music studio, it may be on the occasion of KRAB's 12th Anniversary, Dec 13, 1974, when Phil Andrus assembled a number of musicians who had previously performed on KRAB. With the assistane of Vivian Williams, Phil Andrus and Hank Bradley the following have been identified in the photo (left to right) Rich Levine, guitar; Nancy Schenk Kalionze, bass; Phil Williams, with a fiddle; Barbara Lamb, fiddle; Hank Bradley, banjo; Vivian Williams, piano; Frank Ferrel, fiddle; and Jody Stecher, mandolin(?). If this was recorded, we have not found the tape.
