The KRAB Audio Archive
From the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions

Long ago, in a place not far from here, intelligent, articulate people would occasionally get together and talk about the problems of the time, and their hopes for resolving them. And interested people were invited to listen in. The Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions (CSDI) in Santa Barbara was another source of programs heard on KRAB. The "(R)" at the end of the program description, means that it will be rebroadcast the next morning.

[Editors note: As a witness to the debate and "discourse" taking place at the beginning of the 21st century, I cannot help but ponder the loss of so much intellectual capital. What happened? Could the monetization of "intellectual capital" have resulted in greater value being attributed to the creation of commodities and lesser (or no) value to the pursuit of understanding what it is to be human? It is fortunate that the CSDI collection has been preserved by the University of California, Santa Barbara.]

These programs are listed in order of date broadcast first on KRAB.

Toward a Neuter Gender - Dr Ralph Greenson talks with Elisabeth Mann Borghese - KRAB May 9, 1966

Elisabeth Mann Borgese, author of Ascent of Woman projects a future world in which, once woman is past child-bearing, she becomes a man and takes on a creative role in society. She tells all this to "love" man Ralph Greenson who is audibly shaken. CSDI

Elisabeth Mann Borghese, youngest daughter of Thomas Mann, had diverse interests: anthropology, music, political science (a staff member of the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions), environmental law, and the oceans. When she died in Feb of 2002, the obituary in The Telegraph included the following:

One of her more outlandish achievements, at the end of her life, was to train an English setter to play piano duets with her. To this end she had a special piano made - with no legs and no black notes, and with keys twice as wide as normal.

A visitor wrote the following account of the performance: "Mrs Mann Borgese sat down on the floor at the left of the keyboard, and the dog took his place to the right of middle C. They performed two short duets, one by Schumann and the other by Mozart.

"Encouraged by praise, pats on the head and pieces of meat fed to him during unscored pauses, the dog mostly hit the right note at the right moment. Certainly he had a good sense of rhythm. He made a few mistakes, but she explained this by saying he'd gone for three weeks without practising while she was away."
